Is Your DVD Drive Missing or Not Recognized by Windows? I had this problem after installing a music download software. My DVD drive disappeared and Windows could not recognize the DVD drive. As usual re-booted the computer. Still it did not resolve the problem.
I went to Google and search many websites for a solution. Finally I found the solution from the Microsoft website.
Keep in mind that I have Windows XP Home Edition. My DVD drive troubleshooting may not work for other Windows versions.
Caution: This solution needs updating the Windows registry. You need to do this very carefully as the registry is the foundation for all programs in your PC. I have a little bit experience in Computers (not a wiz). So do this carefully. If you have doubts then dont do this. Get a Computer technician to fix the problem.
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the box, type regedit, and then click OK. This will open the Windows Registry.
3. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4. In the right pane, click UpperFilters.
Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. Do not click this. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry then go to step 7.
5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
6. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
7. In the right pane, click LowerFilters.
8. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
9. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
10. Exit Registry Editor.
11. Restart the computer.
